Why is School Council important?
The School Council exists to foster collaboration between parents, students, community members, and school staff to improve student learning. It serves an advisory role to the school principal and school board regarding educational issues, school budgets, and policies, ensuring the parent voice is heard. School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority defined within the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation. The School Council typically discusses matters such as:
- Feedback on school planning and direction
- Reporting to the Calgary Board of Education
- Advising the principal and board of trustees on school matters
One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the Education Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority defined within the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.

Vacant Role: PAA Chair
During our AGM on Monday, October 26, we will be electing a new executive.
At this time, we are inviting parents/guardians to express interest in the PAA Chair role
As Chair of the PAA,
- you will help support learning and community at Henry Wise Wood by making funds available for the school wish list, as well as other spending approvals in accordance with School Council objectives and AGLC Use of Proceeds rules.
- This role brings together parents, alumni, and community members providing students with additional opportunities, supplies and support.
You’ll work closely with school partners and the SC executive team and help set PAA direction and keep momentum moving forward. - You don’t need to do everything yourself—the role is about connection, coordination, and shared leadership and is supported by a Vice-Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Casino Chair and Directors, including past executive members that are available to support you as needed.
