Summer 2026 Update
Welcome to all our new Warriors! We are thrilled to have you join us this fall. Through the science program, we aim to inspire a deep appreciation for the natural world; while also helping you build critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We hope you'll discover and pursue your science interests with us.
For all Grade 10 science courses, students are required to have their own calculator. Both graphing and scientific calculators are acceptable and will work perfectly for your course. The best calculator is a calculator you are comfortable using. Additionally, all Grade 10 science students are able to purchase goggles for $9.00. These goggles must be worn for all labs and can be used throughout your science classes in Grades 10, 11, and 12. Although loaner goggles are available in all lab classrooms, it's always best to have your own pair.
We offer after-school support through the “Wise Guys” program, available Monday to Thursday in the Science hallway on the 2nd floor from 3:33 pm to 5:00 pm, starting after the second week of school. This is a wonderful opportunity to get into the habit of completing your homework and studying with friends, with an expert teacher on hand to assist you as needed.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
Program of Studies
The Science Team at Henry Wise Wood believes that all students have the capacity to learn science. Through hands-on practical experiences students learn scientific content and processes. This is evidenced through competency based assessment, independent student learning, cooperative learning with peers and students posing meaningful questions about their world. It is our desire to help students develop a set of interrelated attitudes, skills and knowledge (competencies) that can be used for successful learning and living. Students are encouraged to :
- think critically
- manage information
- innovate
- communicate and cooperate
- apply career and life skills
- Science teachers challenge students to step beyond their comfort zone to reach their full potential.
We offer all levels of science ensuring there is a program available where every learner can be successful. Levels include GATE, IB, regular, Science 14 and K&E (10-4) with courses available in general science, biology, chemistry and physics. We also offer a unique program in forensics and astronomy, only available here.
A variety of field trips are offered to the science students including visits to the U of C, Rothney Observatory, and Heritage Park. Every year students have the opportunity to participate in Science Fair, the Waterloo Chemistry contests and the SET challenge at the University of Calgary."
